Bike Rodeo
Hillside school along with all of the other elementary schools in Needham have partnered with the Needham Police Department to deliver our annual Bike Rodeo which helps promote safe bicycle operating practices by our students when they are our riding in our neighborhoods and streets.
The Bike Rodeo is an educational experience for our 3rd grade riders and non-riders alike. Riders and non-riders will visit various bicycle education stations to learn about riding safety. Riders have an opportunity to earn their very own Bicycle license. |
At our annual Bike Rodeo, 3rd grade students rotate through 5 stations outside on the blacktop. At each station, students learn about bicycle safety, helmet safety, bicycle maintenance, some fun and interesting bicycle trivia facts. If students pass each station, pass the riding test, and the bike quiz, students will receive a bicycle license issued by the Needham Police Department at the end of the rodeo or soon thereafter. The Bicycle license allows students to ride to and from school without requiring an adult act as an escort.

Study Guide
- When riding, if there is a sidewalk available, please ride on the sidewalk.
- Keep your bicycle in good working condition. Make sure that your tires are fully inflated and your chain is properly oiled and lubricated.
- Always give pedestrians the right of way while riding on the sidewalk.
- The only sidewalks the police don’t want you riding on in Needham is downtown. There are too many pedestrians walking on downtown sidewalks for bicycles to be traveling on them safely.
- When there is no sidewalk available then you can ride on the street.
- Bicycles follow all of the same rules that cars do while they are on the street.
- Bicycles should always ride on the right side of the road, following the flow of traffic.
- Bicycles need to stop at all stop signs, stop lights, and crosswalks if there is a pedestrian walking across one.
- When you are riding on the road, be cautious of cars parked along the side of the road. If you are passing a parked car, leave enough room between you and the car in case someone were to open one of the doors.
